About Sylhet

Sylhet is the name of a city, a district and a division of Bangladesh. Both Sylhet District and Sylhet Division were named after the city of Sylhet.

Sylhet Division and Sylhet District

Sylhet division is a green land situated in the north-east of Bangladesh. It is surrounded to the north, east and south by Indian States (respectively Meghalaya, Assam and Tripura). To the west one can find Dhaka and Chittagong, two other Bangladeshi divisions.

Sylhet division is sub-divided in four districts, Sunamganj (north-west), Sylhet (north-east), Habiganj (south-west) and Maulvibazar (south-east). Due to it's geographical location, the Sylheti landscape is beautifully green and exotic and covered by terraced tea, pineapple and orange gardens – making Sylhet a popular tourist attraction.

Sylhet

Located on the northern bank of the Surma River and surrounded by rolling hills, Sylhet benefits from picturesque green surroundings made of terraced tea gardens and tropical forests.

Sylhet is an interesting city. It is modern and buoyant, but it has also successfully kept its traditions and prominent historic and religious links.

The people of Sylhet speak in a language distinctly different to the Bangladeshi national language, Bangla. This language, considered to be a dialect of Bangla, is also known as Sylheti. The Sylheti language can be heard in most major Bangladeshi hubs outside of the district of Sylhet.

Many of the Bangladeshi migrants living outside of Bangladesh are issued from Sylhet. Its economy relies not only on Frozen Fish and Tea export from Sylhet, but also on the influx of people and their money coming from expatriate Sylhetis and their descendants flying into Sylhet to visit friends and family. This makes Osmani International Airport – serving Sylhet - the third busiest airport in Bangladesh.
